How Is This the Thing That Went Viral?

TikTok confounds me. I “get” short term video, but I have no idea how the magic algorithms of the clock app decide what goes viral and what doesn’t.

I cross post my shorts to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. I figure the audiences are different and honestly? It’s all kinda the same thing. These are usually small projects. In this case it was a video of me soldering together an LED Christmas tree.

So without further ado, here’s the video:

…And here’s the view breakdown:

  • YouTube: 2k Views
  • Instagram: 1,033 Views
  • TikTok: 123k views

This isn’t typical for me on TikTok. Normally I get 1k – 2k views on that platform for my shorts. 123k views, 78 comments, and over 7,000 likes it NOT normal.

What made this video special? I have no idea.

There’s a real temptation to chase after that success and attempt to replicate it. I’m resisting that urge. I want to do stuff that brings me joy, and that means continuing down the path I’m on.

I’ve got another project in the works that I’m super excited about. Hopefully it will be ready to post soon!
